Levapren® cable covers could protect lives
An ace up your sleeve!
Where there are large concentrations of people or valuable material assets, ever greater efforts are being made to replace halogenated materials. In the case of fire, floorings and cable sheathing made from Levapren®
can protect lives.
The reasons for the improved safety offered by Levapren® vulcanizates in the event of fire include its low viscosity and the adjustable polarity of the material. This means that large amounts of halogen-free flame retardants can be added. Even mixtures with aluminum hydroxide contents of up to 60 percent can be easily processed and, in terms of their fire behavior, the vulcanizates match conventional halogenated formulations.
A further advantage lies in the favorable composition of smoke gases generated by Levapren® products in the event of a fire. When conventional rubber catches fire, it not only produces heat, but also thick smoke which makes orientation difficult. Traditional cable sheaths manufactured from halogenated materials also make it difficult to exit the building due to the formation of corrosive gases which can harm both people and valuable material assets such as computers and their data, valuable paintings, furniture and building structures.
Levapren® can be compounded to produce materials that meet or exceed governmental standards for fire classification, i.e., opacity of smoke and toxicity of burnt gases. The absence of halogens in Levapren® means that hydrogen chloride, polychlorinated dioxins or furans cannot form during combustion; therefore, corrosive or toxic combustion products are expected to be minimized.
